The exhibition initiated by the PTE Doctoral School in Arts is a broad and representative selection that examines a complex, multifold topic that includes multiple perspectives. This examination takes place via the artworks of the institute’s founding artists, current faculty, doctoral and graduate students.
It might seem risky if an exhibition opts to have the title Existence as this is a notion that defines something endlessly heavy and crucial and simultaneously something overwhelmingly few and trivial. Nevertheless, in the fine arts everything obtains a peculiar place-value: existence here is first and foremost perception and creation. Its base is the experienced, impassioned inwardness that realizes itself through a series of choices and decisions. Existing as an artist is namely expanding, being in motion, acting in the scant or spacious, metaphysical, societal/political and phantasy/fictionality-made spaces of “being”. At the same time, existence has a messianic element too that is directed at retrospection: the artist always awaits the redemption in something substantive, in some kind of a truth or recognition. Hence, a fine art exhibition can construct the paradoxon in the conceptual, in the historical, in the institutional, in which existence can appear as an essence. /Attila Hrubi, philosophy scholar, PTE Faculty of Arts
