Program of the Hungarian Theatre Society

Opera life outside of Budapest I.

Participants in conversation with Tibor Csizmadia: István Silló conductor, musical director of the National Theatre of Győr; Dániel Somogyi-Tóth conductor, musical director of the Csokonai Theater of Debrecen, chief musical director of the Debrecen Municipality; dr. Dániel Vadász, founder of Co-Opera, director of the Debrecen Festive Plays

In the previous Good Question series in February 2020 we discussed the issue of opera. In November 2021, we return to the topic, however, we approach the genre in a different perspective. With our guests from Debrecen, Győr, Miskolc and Pécs we are going to look at how it is possible to build on a city’s prominent musical, and particularly, opera tradition today. According what expectations of the viewers one has to compose an opera repertoire of a countryside national theatre. We will try to find out whether there are regional differences in perceiving the place and role of opera in a multiplatform national theatre. Furthermore, we will discuss the structural issues as well, that cover a wide variety of topics, including co-productions, festivals and bringing up a new generation of artists.
